Emotions List

Summary

The Emotions List provides a set of emotion words that participants use to name and describe how they feel during empathy interviews. It supports clearer understanding and documentation of participants’ emotional experiences.

How to use this resource

  1. Review the Emotions List before conducting empathy interviews.
  2. Share the Emotions List with the participant when prompted in the Empathy Interview Guiding Questions.
  3. Ask the participant to select the emotions that best reflect how they are feeling or have felt.
  4. Allow participants to choose one or multiple emotions as appropriate.
  5. Use the selected emotions to support synthesis and insight development.

Quick Tip

  • Let participants choose emotions in their own words when possible.
  • Avoid interpreting or assigning emotions on the participant’s behalf.
  • Encourage participants to explain why they chose certain emotions.
  • Use the same emotion labels consistently across interviews.
